A little sip of Italy is what you get when you drive up to Crown Winery in Humboldt, TN. The front of the building looks like a rustic, vine covered home somewhere in the Italian hills. The parking is just below the building’s elevated, brick-paved driveway. To the immediate left is the covered patio which sits between the winery’s tasting room and Queen’s Pavilion (event space). Further left is the parking lot which separates the winery from its newly built AirBnB’s. The archway that leads to the front door has beautiful vines which have made their home on the ceiling, inviting you into a great tasting experience.
Inside, the warm tones of wood and clean, white plaster walls transport you to Europe. Looking to both sides there is plenty of seating, whether you are a party of one, a couple or a group. Straight ahead is the wine bar. A nice place to belly up to and have a tasting. They do offer flights, but I prefer to always taste at a bar with the servers. They have great insight into the wine, its story and more.
Along with the many events that Crown Winery hosts, they also offer craft beers made in house, wine slushies and pizza made in their own kitchen. Along with their wines, they have souvenirs that range from wine accessories to chocolates available for purchase.
The experience here at Crown Winery is about friendly connection. A great place to hang out with friends and just ‘wine down’.
The Wine:
I will start with the TN Beacon Bright. If you enjoy dry, white wine, this one is for youIt is a dryer version of their Cayuga White which is an off-dry wine. I like to call this wine ‘crisp’. Fru Apple and citrus play well in this one. Also, proceeds from the sales of this wine are donated to the University of TN Dept. of Agriculture.
Tiara is a wonderful and fun wine that is produced here. Based on the traminette grape, this wine is slightly citrusy and sparkling. A semi-sweet wine, Tiara was suggested as a great wine for mimosas. While I enjoyed it on its own, I can definitely see it being used in that way.
For the dry, red lovers, there are three I can not easily choose from. The Bourbon Barrel Aged Norton, Fifty 50 and the Forgotten Five all three had my eyes wide with enjoyment. The Bourbon Barrel Aged Norton had my attention for it’s oaky and bourbon notes. It would pair well with a nice steak dinner or red sauced pasta or on own its as an after-dinner drink. Not quite a digestif, like a port or sherry, but as a wine that would wash down like a warming stream on chilly day. The Fifty 50 is a dry red that is more fruit forward. Luscious in the mouth, you get notes of red berries with a rich tone. The Forgotten Five won the top spot of these three for me. The driest one, it was full bodied and gave me black cherry notes. It finished with a lightly peppered ending that was alive.
There are about ten wines that are classified sweet at Crown Winery. I won’t mention them all but a few of the favorites are Cranberry Rosé, the Crown Peach which is their version of a Moscato and the Blueberry Twist, a chambourcin grape wine that is infused with fresh blueberries.
The Experience:
I have visited Crown Winery with friends and alone. I have enjoyed the wines, the pizza and the company. I have even witnessed a couple’s photoshoot on the grounds once before and they (and their photographer) graciously accepted our compliments of their look paired with the winery as the backdrop.
The servers are helpful and move at a quick pace to help all their guests. Whether you have a tasting at the bar or a flight/ glass/ food at a table, they are helpful to check on you. On my last visit, I was fortunate to have a tasting with Scott, the husband half of the owner duo. I was pleased to find that we have very similar inclinations when it comes to our tastes in wine.
Overall, Crown Winery, to me, is a place for congregating. Having a lighthearted conversation over wine and pizza always brings friends together. It is also a great place for an early date. It has the romance of Italy without the price tag of a flight to Europe.
Tastings:
Wine Flight of four is currently priced at 13$, while a tasting at the bar is 10$ per person. Each entails different specifics, but if you’ve been with me for a while then you know that I suggest a tasting at the bar. That way you can experience the wine from the people who are around it most.
My Takeaway:
A beautiful, rustic atmosphere with friends to relax over good wine is definitely a slow-down moment that I always talk about. Gather your group, or your other, whomever they may be, and head to Crown Vineyard・Winery・Brewery. Make some memories with your cherished ones while just taking in the moment.
