Take a little ride out to the country to find a fun staff with a light atmosphere and some favored wines and you will find yourself at Century Farm Winery. A farm that has been in the family for more than a hundred years. The Center for Historic Preservation has dubbed this winery a “Tennessee Century Farm”.
The farm’s heritage is carried on through a mother (Mrs. Jo), her son and his wife (owner and operators) and even their children who help out. Mrs. Jo’s grandparents built their home and farmed the land where she herself was born and Century Farms now operates. A lot of history lies in that land.
Keeping the tradition of hospitality and growth, Century Farms has a lot to offer. Plenty of wines, events, merchandise and some good ol’ kick back time is what you will find here.
The Wine:
The Corot Noir is a delightful red with a little bite. Not exactly peppery but a super light spice precedes the very dry finish. It leaves your palate ready for your next sip or your next bite of something delicious.
I enjoy the Irish Rose which is a blush, semi-sweet wine. Slightly dry but with just enough sweetness, this wine does well as a stand alone. Dry enough to have with a meal, yet sweet enough to have on a warm day.
One of Century’s most popular wines is the Heritage Red. This is a sweet red wine that has a good amount of sugar without being cloying. This is a staple at Century Farms and I certainly see why.
Century also has a few fruit wines. One that I found the most interesting was the Raspberry Delight. Think Sweet Tarts candy. There is no better way that I can describe it. This one is a lot of fun to drink.
One of my favorites is a specialty wine called Chocolate Decadence. This is a port style wine; sweet, luscious and rich. It has a note of milk and semi-sweet chocolate with a nose of and hints of rich brandy.
The Experience:
For me, hanging out at Century Farms Winery is kind of like home. The staff is kind and quick on their feet. There are many wines to choose from and plenty of outdoor seating with views to enjoy it all. Their newly built deck is a wonderful place to sit and enjoy your wine. Neka, a sweetheart, and her husband Bart, a chill guy, are the owners who are very active on the floor and engaged with their guests.
The selection of wines is a nice range starting from dry all the way to fruit and dessert wines. They also have a couple of wine slushies. Along with the wines, they offer bottled water, canned craft beer and snacks/charcuterie. In addition, there are souvenirs and merch which includes jams, such as the Five Pepper Strawberry.
Their tasting room is a very nicely finished barn with honey colored wood walls, light and warm just like the atmosphere that the staff creates. The tasting room also holds the event space along with a bridal changing suite and an attached, covered porch and side deck. A large bar that can fit about twenty people is where you will do your tastings or purchase wine and other merchandise. Off the back of the building is the vast vineyard that is a wonderful setting for photos.
Tastings:
Tastings are five for five dollars with a maximum of two tastings (total of ten wines). They also have a flight option of four wines for sixteen dollars. The staff is very knowledgeable and helpful during your tasting and beyond.
My Takeaway:
I find Century Farm to be a fun place to visit with a lighthearted atmosphere. I’ve been on a rainy Sunday afternoon and everyone inside seemed to bring the sunshine. The many options that they offer leaves something for everyone. Choose wine or a slushie or even a make-at-home slush kit.
I had the opportunity to sit and talk with Neka during my most recent visit. I shared with her that Bart had taken me and my friend to see the production room the very first time I visited CFW. I told her that it had been part of the inspiration for what I am doing now.
Neka Horton’s philosophy on caring for CFW’s patrons and the business is, “Customer service is key. Treat everyone like a guest who comes into your home.”
So, for a fun staff and a good selection of wine, I recommend Century Farms Winery. A farm that has been around for a century with hospitality that keeps getting better.
