I made it back to the ‘Water’s Edge’ in Kentucky!
I was passing through town and I had time to stop in to see what was new. There were a couple of things, which I will tell you about for sure, but the experience was a personal enlightenment.
I didn’t have the pleasure of speaking to the owners this time around, father and daughter team: Tiana and Charlie. But their presence and dedication was felt just as much as when we did share a moment together.
I had a wonderful server who I found out later had only been working there for just a few weeks. Her service and knowledge made it feel as if she had been a part of the team from the beginning.
What made my experience so amazing was something that I talk about often that happens when visiting wineries. I met someone! No, no, not like that, haha. I was speaking with my server and mentioned that I’d been a teacher in the past. The husband at a table nearby turned to me after and mentioned that he and his wife were retired educators. What happened next was the epitome of what wine is: connection. He invited me over to their table for a glass of wine. Then we chatted over the remainder of the bottle and it felt like old friends. The wife, a whiz at finding information online, was so helpful in giving me pointers on a venture that I am currently looking into for HGG.
I almost chose not to go this day, or at all, due to traveling a distance and other mishaps. But it was a moment that I needed to break up my day and it was well worth it.
Now, onto the wines I tried this time!
Silky Essence- One of the new wines here, this one was tropical. The flavors of citrus and pineapple with a hint of passion fruit or mango. The name comes from the light but creamy texture of this wine. A good one to have chilled…perhaps under an umbrella on the beach!
Carmen- Now Carmen is a classy girl. She’s got dark cherry and chocolate, a light background of smoke and velvety-ness that is sultry. This red wine is one that you’d imagine having at a jazz club where there were only white linens and a single candle on the table as cigar smoke creates a dramatic halo in the room.
Pink Moscato- I was a bit worried about this one for me simply because of the implied sweetness. I’m still a dry guy but the Pink Moscato made me betray my taste buds for a bit. For me, this was like a juicer with the summer berries coming through strong. Though it was sweet for my liking, I would enjoy a glass of this with something a bit salty, maybe potato chips, plain.
Pina Colada- Ah, pineapple and coconut flavors together can never go wrong in my book. This wine did not disappoint. While still a bit sweeter on the scale, this one was perfect for a wine cocktail. I liked it from bottle to glass, but I could imagine a slushie made with this one would be delectable. The crushed ice would give that traditional texture while swirling the flavors in a summertime glass of bliss.
Honorable mention- Almond Sparkling- I loved it before and I loved it again. There is just something about this sparkler that just delights me. It is the crispness, the soft bubbles and the light, toasty taste of the almonds together that delight the senses. As mentioned in the first article (here), it has the subtle sweetness of a good marzipan but with bubbles!
Also, I just learned that the grape used to make this wine, the French Columbard, is also used to make Cognac and Armagnac because of its high acidity.
As I have said before, wine is about connection. This could be connection to the agricultural product, winemakers or others who enjoy wine. I am so grateful for the experience that Water’s Edge Winery in Elizabethtown, KY provided, again!
