Delta Blues Winery in Lakeland, TN is a great place for relaxation amongst grapevines. About a 20 minute (13 mile) drive from the Wolfchase Galleria Mall in Memphis, this winery is a nice get quick getaway with just a few miles of highway driving. Set less than a quarter of a mile off of the Stewart Road exit, you will be sipping and settling into relaxation in no time.
With a wide expanse of a tasting room and a large walk-up bar and tables inside, this is a place to spend some time. The outside hosts multiple areas to relax including the wrap around porch, the covered pavilion and even a lakeside dock with seating. The calm lake can be seen from any of these points as you sip your delicious wine overlooking the vineyard. There’s an outdoor stage where many bands are hosted throughout the year. There is even a playground for the kiddos along with a woods area for bringing your own picnic. This winery is not short on areas in which to relax and take some much needed downtime.
Along with places to hang out while at the winery, they offer many events. Bands and food trucks on the weekends are among some of their offerings. The live music occurs on some Friday nights from 7-10pm and some Sunday afternoons. You are allowed to bring your own snacks, but they ask for no outside beverages. But you’re there for the wine, right;). They do offer space for event rentals as well where you can host weddings or parties of all kinds.
The Wine:
You can taste four wines for a small fee (see info. below). I suggest trying at least one dry, one semi-dry, one semi-sweet and then one that intrigues you. This would give you a nice array of the wines that they offer (ciders included) But if four is not enough, you could ask for another tasting to add four more.
Delta Blues offers one dry white wine along with a couple of semi-sweets, then a few reds and a few sweets. If you enjoy a dry red, I would suggest Dr. Ed’s Rustic Red. It is what I like to call warm on the palette. The spices, cinnamon in particular, come through very nicely without a punch in the face. It is suggested to have along with things like bbq pork or steak. I say this one is a holiday wine. It reminded me of Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner with its warm but spicy notes. However, it is good for any time of the year.
For the sweet wines, Just Peachy is a hit. This one is super sweet but easy to drink. Maybe too easy, so be careful! For me, it was very reminiscent of peach preserves. Being from the south, we know that preserves and jelly are different. The pectin in a jelly sort of hides the fruit it is made from. But in preserves, it is fruit first and this wine does just that. A nice mouthful of fresh peaches begins the adventure, then you get almost a toasty hint of sugar that follows. I also want to mention the Plum Delicious wine. The name is right on the nose…and tongue. I liked this one even more than the Just Peachy. Being a dry wine lover, the sweetness can be a bit overwhelming for me as my palette can be highly sensitive on the sweetness receptors. The Delta Blues’ plum wine is sweet, just not as sweet as the peach. However, I could imagine having the Plum Delicious with a biscuit. Weird, I know, but the savory butteriness of the biscuit would pair well with this wine. I can imagine having a rosemary scone along with this one and the balance being just right.
The Experience:
I have been to Delta Blues Winery a couple of times now and I have to say, it is a pretty relaxed and chilled environment. My first time was with a cherished relative on a Friday evening as a quick getaway to connect. I’d asked my cousin to tag along, knowing that she had one kind of wine she typically drank and bought it from a chain grocery store. There is nothing wrong with that, but we like to expand our horizons around here. 😋 We went just to try the wines and ended up staying for about three hours. While there, my cousin tried a few wines that she’d never thought of trying before. She even found a dry wine that she said she could handle and that was surprising to her, and me. After about the first hour, unbeknownst to us, a food truck arrived. We inquired about the food truck and realized that there was also going to be live music happening that night. We stayed for a little while longer and the place was filling fast. Even with everyone in the tasting room and the good music, we were still able to enjoy our wine, food and conversation. My cousin later talked about the time we had and appreciated our one on one moment there at Delta Blues Winery.
My most recent experience was a solo drop-in. I knew I would be in the area, but I wasn’t sure that time would allow for me to visit. Fortunately, I was able to stop in for a tasting to remind me of what I liked before. It had been a while since I’d last been but I had a good memory of the wines and the times. There were only about three other parties there at the time, as this was about two o’clock in the afternoon during midweek. One couple was hanging out under the pavilion enjoying the lake view, music and wine. I did a tasting and purchased some snacks for the road, as I was traveling. I enjoyed the variety and complex flavors of the wines I chose. Sweet wines aren’t my usual go to, but as I mentioned about the Just Peachy wine, I thoroughly enjoyed the way it reminded me of old-fashioned peach preserves. I took a nice walk around the pavilion and admired the property for a bit and it was very relaxing. The weather was a little humid but the views made everything worth it.
Tastings: For a cost of $10.00 you will receive your choice of four different wines. That does include the Long Roads Ciders, which is Delta Blues’ own signature ciders. So feel free to mix and match not only dry and sweet but also a cider or two.
My Takeaway:
Delta Blues Winery is a little slice of relaxation away from the busyness of everyday life. If you want views with your wine and options of places to relax in, this is the place for you in the Memphis/Lakeland, TN area. For a 15 to 20 minute drive from Memphis, TN, you will get time to relax, sip some nice wine and un-wine-d. (See what I did there 🙂) If you are traveling to the area or live near, I would recommend stopping in to Delta Blues Winery. Where you can have a relaxing sip of wine grown from grapes cultivated in soil fed by the Mississippi River.

I felt like I could taste “Just Peachy.” I can’t wait to try it on my travels one day. Hopefully it’s a staple wine that is always stocked! According to their site, it’s a best seller that I can’t wait to enjoy with friends.
