HGG 2024 Year In Review

It is time to close a chapter and begin writing a new one, but one thing I love to do is to reflect.

In this post I will list just a few, definitely not all, of the wineries, meaderies and distilleries and some highlights of each which I have visited in the year of 2024!  I have had a blast traveling and experiencing the different establishments that I have been blessed to visit.  Each one with their own unique style of not only winemaking, but also of hospitality and engagement.

Without further ado, here are some of the places I recommend you check out on your wine tour (whiskey and mead included):

Century Farm Winery

Just a couple miles’ drive from the main hwy I-40 west in Jackson, TN sits a family owned farm that has been around for, you guessed it, a century, and then some.  This winery has some classics done well and hospitality to boot.

What strikes me:  The kindness of everyone employed at this winery shines through their willingness to serve as well as through the wine that is produced there.  The owners are always friendly and checking on their guests.

My Recommendation:  for dry, Corot Noir and for sweet, Heritage Red

Their StoryCentury Farm Charm

Eight Shires Coloniale Distillery

Located in Williamsburg, VA in a quiet, unassuming corner sits a humble distillery with a rich history in whiskey making.  8 Shires uses age-old techniques with forward thinking innovation to craft some fine spirits.

What strikes me:  The craft in which 8 shires not only makes their spirits, but also their cocktails.  Some of the best I have ever had, simple yet unique.

My Recommendation: the 8 Shires coffee as well as Paul Revere’s Lantern

Their Story: Good Libations- Whiskey in Williamsburg and Have Another Sip

De Terra Vineyards and Wine

Nestled on a small family farm in Somerville, TN, sits a winery whose grapes and their owners are down to earth.  De Terra wines was ten years in the making as the producers wanted to be sure that their wine was a true representation of the care and attention they put into it.

What strikes me:  Jerry Pentz’ calm spirit and warm conversation is tasted in the wines he crafts.  After meeting his wife, Teresa, I can tell that this is a labor of love for them both and they are happy to share it.

My Recommendation:  a chambourcin called Cedar Ridge and the Muscadine Red

Their Story:  Down to Earth Wine

River Ridge Winery

Take the drive down a curvy road through the woods in Scott City, MO and you will end up River Ridge Winery.  A quiet place with wines that are big on flavor and personality, this winery is a must as a wine lover’s get away for a bit of magic and charm.

What strikes me:  The enchanted forest vibe that the winery gives off as it backs up to a hill and sits quietly waiting for you to explore.  Along with some wines that are sure to inspire you and a menu with delicious food, over the river and beyond the ridge is the way to go.

My Recommendation:  the softness of the Frostbite White and the magic of the Moon Water

Their Story:  Over the River, Beyond the Ridge…

Silver Hand Meadery

Set in a former doctor’s office in a quiet, commercial area of historic Williamsburg, VA is a place where bee’s honey becomes man’s libation.  Dating back 4,000 years, honey has been fermented into a spirit called mead.  Silver Hand has worked at their craft and come up with some interesting versions of their own.

What strikes me:  The light and airy atmosphere creates a mellow vibe in which to try not only the fermented honey as mead, but honey as its raw, natural product.  There are many things to try here.

My Recommendation:  do a tasting, it comes with many of the flavored honeys as well as a mead tasting

Their Story:  A Honeyed History

Forty Cannons Winery

Approach the small silo that is under the black pirate flag on a beautiful farm in Henderson, TN and you will know you have found Forty Cannons Winery.  Val, the not-so-mad mad scientist at the helm, creates some of the most intriguing wine from her own grapes as well as other crops grown on her farm.

What strikes me:  The atmosphere of the entire farm and the sweet demeanor of everyone there, animals and people alike.  Also, the uniqueness in the flavors of wine that come from the hard work and passion displayed.

My Recommendation:  dark cherry & cacao of Bleedin’ Hearts, tropical heat of Scurvy dog

Their Story:  Hoist Th’ Colors

Laguna Canyon Winery

Ensconced by the mountains around it rests Laguna Canyon Winery in Laguna Beach, CA.  Gathering grapes from up and down the California coast to make their richly nuanced wines, this winery elevates the experience in a space that is light and inviting.

What strikes me:  The elevated tasting experience where you are on your own and can choose to taste as many of the wines you would like via multi-wine dispensers.  The open layout and light wood tones of the tables and barrels invite you to savor and enjoy the wines.

My Recommendation:  2021 Rosé Purple Paws California, 2020 Grenache Paso Roblés

Their Story:  Wine in the Canyon
